Bank’s business grew quickly, and by 1910 he had five stores in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. He began to expand beyond the Mid-Atlantic region in the 1920s, opening stores in Philadelphia, New York, and Boston.

By the 1930s, Jos. A. Bank was one of the largest men’s clothing retailers in the United States. The company continued to grow in the 1940s and 1950s, opening stores across the country. In 1963, Joseph A. Bank died, and his son, Herman, took over the business.

Herman Bank expanded the company rapidly in the 1960s and 1970s, opening stores in every state. He took the company public in 1986, and it became the largest publicly traded men’s clothing retailer in the United States. In the 1990s, the company began to expand internationally, opening stores in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Germany.
