Dandamudi Amar Mohandas was born on December 5, 1976, in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India, to a Telugu family. Amar has two brothers, Dandamudi Srinivas and Dandamudi Rajasekhar, and two sisters, Dandamudi Vijaya Lakshmi and Dandamudi Saroja.

Amar did his schooling at the Andhra University in Visakhapatnam. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, in 1999. He then moved to the United States to pursue a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
